Are our MOAIs art?

Someone recently said that our figures are “just” carvings, made by an amateur with no training. Sure, they are quite beautiful, but they are only handicrafts, because if they were “real art”, then the carver would be an artist.

This raises the question of who decides what is “real art” and what is not? Experts have already filled entire books on this question, but it remains an ongoing issue. We don’t care about this discussion, because what matters to us is the work, and first and foremost – just like art – it simply has to please the viewer. That’s it!
