Origin of MOAI

Origin of MOAI

The colossal stone statues created by the early inhabitants of Easter Island (Rapa Nui) are usually referred to as MOAI. They were created between around 930 and 1,812 A.D. It is less well known that the Rapa Nui also carved small figures from toromiro wood. These figures are a maximum of 40 cm high and were probably worn around the necks of dignitaries during processions.
