What does Easter have to do with Easter Island?
The locals call their island “Te Pito te Henua” (the navel of the world). It was only given the name “Easter Island” on April 5, 1722, Easter Sunday, when the Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen landed on the island and named it after the day it was discovered. Incidentally, the pirate Edwards Davis is said to have sighted the island as early as 1687. However, he did not go ashore.
